Formed from the remnants of two local bands Southern County started life performing with both electric and acoustic instruments. The band played in a number of local music venues with good reports. However discovering a mutual love of country and bluegrass music, the band ultimately decided to focus on playing this kind of music solely with more traditional 'acoustic' instruments.
The band expanded when long time friend of the band, John Williams, was invited to join on a permanent basis. To celebrate this addition the band was renamed Southern County. Throughout 2008 and 2009 Southern County have been favourably received in the theatres and arts centres in the South West of England. In July 2009 they released their first unsigned album 'Rush' of original material which has been accepted on airplay by ukcountryradio.com. The single 'City Rush Hour' from the album is also up for song of the year with ukcountryradio.com. Please vote! |

| Carly Hurst Vocals, Guitar Lead vocals are primarily handled by Carly, who has a clear and distinctive country style. She has become the natural focal point of the band on stage, especially after we elected her front person! Carly was encouraged into musical life by playing guitar and singing harmonies with her sister. As she gained confidence Carly later worked as a solo artist singing contemporary pop songs in a country style in venues throughout the South-West. She also regularly stood in for half of well known duo, Twice Shy, on the pub and cabaret circuit. Inspired by vocalists Faith Hill, Alison Krauss and Shania Twain, Carly has always been keen to get involved in a country outfit and after hearing her sing we were keen to get her involved with us! As well as the close harmony singing, Carly particularly enjoys the technical challenges presented by many of the songs played in the Southern County programme. | ![]() |
| Dave Carrett Guitar, Double Bass, Banjo, Mandolin & Vocals A 16 year old version of Dave started his musical life in Black Mariah playing Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath covers as well as original material. But having tired of moshing in the garage Dave got some culture and started to make some real progress playing bass in a dance and jazz band based over at Street. Having played professionally on the club circuits in the north for a number of years, Dave took a break from the music business. Meeting up with the rest of Southern County was enough to tempt him out of retirement and in to spending cash on lovely instruments. Sharing the same love of roots music as the rest of the band Dave particularly enjoys the close harmony singing found in so much bluegrass music. For Dave the musical programme developed by Southern County represents the most engaging form of music he has had the privilege to perform. High praise indeed! | ![]() |
| John Williams Guitar Yes the one and only John Williams...no not the one who did the Star Wars soundtrack...and no not the one who plays classical guitar either...it's John Williams from Lydeard St Lawrence... | ![]() |
| Natasha Morse Dobro, Bass & Vocals Aiming to become the female version of virtuoso dobro player Jerry Douglas, Tash modestly describes herself as a 'work in progress'. All we can say is that we are digging that real lonesome sound she gets. Tash has been playing since her mid-teens when the guitar playing bug bit her while watching a rock'n'roll band. For several years she played in a variety of electric bands learning as she went. Life for Tash was never quite the same after she discovered an Alison Krauss album while wandering the aisles of our local music shop (her favourite occupation!). Out went the electric guitar in favour of the acoustic and Tash was beating the streets to find her dobro. As our resident new country music expert Tash is usually to be found looking for the next new track for us to learn. She is loving her acoustic music experience and can think of nothing better than to be part of a team playing country music. | ![]() |
